2016-2017 NJ All-State Treble Chorus

January 26th, 2017

Dear All-State Treble Chorus Member,

Happy New Year! I hope you are looking forward to the February concert weekend and our All-State Treble Chorus performance. This letter contains reminders of the things you should already know, plus a few little ‘extras.’ Please take the time to read it carefully and show it to your parents right away. Then, keep it in a safe place for future reference.

THE EVENT WEEKEND, WHICH TAKES PLACES IN EAST BRUNSWICK AT THE HILTON HOTEL (3 Tower Center Blvd, off Route 18 North) AND THEN THE CONCERT AT NJPAC IN NEWARK, IS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23rd (IN THE AFTERNOON) THROUGH SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25th (AFTER THE CONCERT). THE CONCERT IS AT NJPAC (NJ Performing Arts Center) IN NEWARK AT 3PM ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25th.

TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE DIRECTLY THROUGH TICEKTMASTER AND BY CALLING THE NJPAC BOX OFFICE (1-888-GO-NJPAC).

The final rehearsal before the concert weekend will be held on Sunday, February 5th, 2017 at JFK MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL (in Iselin, NJ) from 1:00PM to 5:00PM. DIRECTIONS TO THIS LOCATION ARE ONLINE AT WWW.NJMEA.ORG. PLEASE GIVE THEM TO YOUR PARENTS, TEACHERS AND BUS DRIVERS. THESE DIRECTIONS WERE PROVIDED TO US BY THE HIGH SCHOOL ITSELF. Please arrive at least fifteen minutes early to sign-in. THERE ARE NO PLANS TO HAVE MUSIC TESTING AT THIS REHEARSAL. HAVING SAID THAT, PLEASE COME INTO REHEARSAL KNOWING YOUR MUSIC. TESTING MAY BE DONE IF NECESSARY; WE DON’T WANT TO LOSE ANYONE AT THIS POINT, ALTHOUGH IT HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST.

The Concert ‘weekend’ is February 23rd through the 25th. You must arrive at the East Brunswick Hilton Hotel on Thursday, February 23rd between 4PM and 6PM for check-in. There will be no exceptions. Dinner on Thursday is on your own. Please review your itinerary (not included in this letter, but has been posted online on the njmea website) to plan when you will eat your dinner on Thursday. No one will be permitted to leave the hotel for any reason between check-in and the concert on Saturday, except for scheduled rehearsals with the entire ensemble, which take place on the Rutgers Campus in Voorhees Chapel. (You will be bussed to and from those rehearsals.) Directions to the hotel can also be found on www.njmea.org. Your preliminary itinerary is now available on the www.njmea.org website. Please go there, download and print that schedule for reference for you and your parents. You will receive a final itinerary when you check in at the hotel.

This year the photo will not be taken on Thursday before the first rehearsal, but will be taken on Saturday at the dress rehearsal at NJPAC. Therefore, please be prepared to show us that you have your choir robe when you check in (or remind us that you asked to borrow one at the Feb. 5th rehearsal). THIS IS A CHANGE FROM YEARS PAST; YOU SHOULD LEAVE YOUR CHOIR ROBE IN YOUR ROOM BEFORE THE 7PM REHEARSAL ON THURSDAY.

Friday is three rounds of long rehearsals interrupted only by meals. Saturday is breakfast, check-out and then off to Newark for a lovely banquet luncheon at the Robert Treat Hotel, and then the show. You will be dismissed from the NJPAC after the entire event is over. NO ONE WILL BE DISMISSED BEFORE THE END OF THE ENTIRE CONCERT (approximately between 5:30 and 6PM) FOR ANY REASON. ALSO, THERE IS NO TRANSPORATION PROVIDED AFTER THE CONCERT SO PLEASE BE SURE TO SECURE A RIDE HOME FROM NJPAC AFTER THE CONCERT IS OVER.

The Concert is Saturday, February 25th, 2017 at 3PM at NJPAC in Newark. Tickets will be (or may already be) available through Ticketmaster, and at the NJPAC Box Office. Seating is reserved.

The concert will feature All State Treble Chorus, All State Band and All State Wind Ensemble. Each ensemble will be present and remain for the entire length of the program regardless of their placement in the program. Therefore you will not be dismissed from the concert until after the conclusion of the concert. There will be no exceptions regarding this matter under any circumstances. If you do not plan to stay until the end of the concert (approximately 5:30 – 6:00PM), you will not be able to participate in this program. Furthermore, failure to adhere to this policy will result in the loss of your All State pin, and if you are an underclass person you will lose your eligibility to audition for any All State ensemble next year. Please stay for the performance to support your colleagues. Again, you will be dismissed after the conclusion of the concert; you will not be returning to the hotel, and NJMEA does not provide bussing from NJPAC after the concert. You will need your own ride home from NJPAC. Thank you, in advance, for your (and your family’s) cooperation with this policy.

CONCERT DRESS- All chorus members will wear choir robes. If you cannot borrow one from your school, please see either Mr. Cantaffa or Ms. Alagna at the February 5th rehearsal and make arrangements to borrow one from us. Also, please wear black dress pants and black shoes under your choir robe. You may be viewing the other two ensembles’ performances from the audience. Therefore your attire should be appropriate to attend a formal concert-hall performance. You will not be able to change after your concert (except to remove the choir robe.)

Please remember that the focus of this project is making beautiful music. Come to the East Brunswick Hilton with your music memorized, and be ready to sing your heart out for 2 and ½ days. Be sure to follow the instructions of your chaperones at all times throughout the concert weekend. They are there to look after your safety and help organize the movement of the group. You may only bring ONE suitcase and ONE carry bag in addition to your purse. Pay particular attention to the check-out procedures for Saturday. A preliminary itinerary, which is likely to be adjusted somewhat as we approach the concert weekend, can now be found on the www.njmea.org website. Please remember to go there, follow the links and download it so that you and your family can become more familiar with the performance weekend’s activities. If you fully apply yourself to this project, it will be a lifetime memory for you. Many NJASTC alums will agree. If you have any questions that are not answered in this packet, please feel free to contact us by email (jcantaffa@rocknrollchorus.com or jalagna@monroe.k12.nj.us). In the mean time, stay healthy and keep practicing! We cannot tell you how excited we are to hear you sing again!

Best regards,
Mr. Joseph Cantaffa & Ms. Jennifer Alagna
